Elsie Jane (Ferguson) Cassell, 93, of Bridgewater (formerly of Bassett, VA), passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Bassett, on August 23, 1918, and was a daughter of the late George and Mattie Lou (Mize) Ferguson.

Elsie worked at Bassett-Walker Knitting Mill. She was a member of Bassett Church of the Brethren where she was a lifetime deacon, and Sunday school teacher. She loved children and was an avid gardner.

She was united in marriage on July 23, 1938 to J. Irving Cassell, who preceded her in death on May 3, 2005.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Pettis and husband Hugh of Raphine, and Linda C. Clem and husband Jerry of Harrisonburg. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Cassell and wife Elena, Nancy Bergman and husband Kurt, Susan Davis and friend Lawrence Sexton, Diane Callahan and husband Rich, Philip Clem and wife Angie, and Michael Clem and wife Kimberly and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Clifford Cassell and a daughter-in-law, Janie Cassell.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Noel Naff officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the Bassett Church of the Brethren.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Lantz Chapel of the Bridgewater Retirement community with the Rev. Jeffery Carr officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the Lantz Chapel.

Friends may call anytime on Friday afternoon at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.
