Born November 11, 1915 near Port Republic, F. Everette Smith grew up in that neighborhood between that and Mill Creek.
He attended grade school at Timber Ridge and was a 1932 graduate of Port Republic High School before attending Bridgewater College for one year.
Everette was baptized into Mill Creek church of the Brethren at twelve years of age and remained faithful in attendance and held all elected offices in the church except Treasurer. He also taught Sunday school many years beginning in his late 20's.
He was married November 12, 1936 to the late Allie M. (Armentrout) Smith and raised a family of four.
He chose farming as life's vocation, and was active in all farmer cooperatives. He was a board member and president of Rockingham Petroleum Coop.; board member Rockingham Coop Farm Bureau for one year, and President of Rockingham Farm Bureau Association for 17 years; Board member of Virginia Farm Bureau Federation for 12 years and helped organize and served as President and General Manager of Rockingham Sheep and Wool Producers; Board member of Valley of Milk Producers for 12 years; Board member and President of American Dairy Association of VA; Helped organize and was a board member of Southeast Dairy Industry Association located in Atlanta, GA for 23 years; Board member and President of Virginia Egg Council; held all offices and was a charter member of McGaheysville Ruritan Club established in 1939.
Everette is survived by three daughters, Martha Lou Sheets and husband Nelson W. Sheets of McGaheysville; Dorothy "Dot" Smith Wright and husband Robert M. of McGaheysville; and Paige Landes and husband Ray of Harrisonburg; a son, Fred Smith and wife Shirley of McGaheysville. Everette is also survived by a sister, Hazel Diehl of Mt. Crawford; two brothers, J. Benjamin Smith of Harrisonburg; and Dr. Bobby Long Smith of Bridgewater; ten grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter also survive.
He was preceded in death by a infant daughter, Sarah Sue Smith.
A memorial service will be conducted at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, Port Republic at 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2012, with Rev. Wayne Pence and Rev. Lee Kinsey officiating. The McGaheysville Ruritan Club and the Pathfinders Sunday School will act as honorary pallbearers.
There will be a private burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes.
