M. Elton Garner
M. Elton Garner passed away July 9, 2009, at the Bridgewater Retirement Community Nursing Home. He was born to Earl E. and Grace E. (Mitchel) Garner on September 19, 1920, in Loraine, Ohio. He was happily married for over 62 years to the late Martha Charlotte (Graham) Garner and was a Captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps stationed in India during World War Two.
He graduated from the Univ. of Michigan as a Mechanical Engineer in 1947 and moved to Barberton, OH, Vestal, NY, and then Fairfax, VA. He and Charlotte moved to the Bridgewater Retirement Community in 1993 and he moved to the Assisted Living unit in 2007, after Charlotte passed away. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Whipple of Hershey, PA, her husband, Leon, and his other brother-in-law Melvin Dadd. He is survived by his three children, Charles E. Garner of Waynesboro, VA, Keith G. Garner of Las Vegas, NV, and Gail E. Garner of Fort Valley, VA, and three grandchildren, Graham, Ashley and Nicole Garner, as well as his sister, Marion Dadd of Huntington, IN and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
A memorial service will be held at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church at 2:00 PM on Sunday, followed by a reception for friends and family at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Bridgewater College Endowment Fund, 402 E. College St, Bridgewater, VA 22812, attention Institutional Advancement Office.
