Obituary for Clayton Nathaniel Towers

Clayton Nathaniel Towers, 97, of Bridgewater, passed away Friday, October 6, 2017 at home.

He was born in Church Hill, MD on November 4, 1919, the son of the late Audra (Judy) and Andrew Jackson Towers.

Clayton was a graduate of Cordova, MD High School and in January 1948 entered Bridgewater College, graduating in June 1951. He joined the U.S. Army in May of 1945, serving in the Philippines, Japan and Korea during WWII before being discharged December 1946. Clayton was a teacher in Rockingham County for 33 years, teaching at Clover Hill Elementary, Dayton Elementary, and John Wayland Intermediate School. He was a graduate of the National Radio Institute and for 25 years, he worked part-time servicing radio and TVs. He became an amateur radio operator in 1957. Clayton also taught string music for 30-35 years. He was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and taught Sunday school for 40 years (35 at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and 5 at Emmanuel Church of the Brethren). He was a member of the Bridgewater Rotary club and had perfect attendance for 57 years.
Clayton was very interested in the weather. He reported weather to WSVA and to several TV stations in Virginia for 42 years, and kept records for 50 years.

On June 10, 1950, he married Jacqueline Dawn (Grove) Towers, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, James C. Towers of Bridgewater; daughters, Susan T. Anhold and husband David of Greenwood, and Jane L. Towers of Bridgewater; five grandchildren, Jodie Sprayberry and husband Matt, Jenna Menge and husband Chris, Ben Anhold and wife Susie, Matt Anhold, and Emily Anhold; six great grandchildren, Sam Sprayberry, Jacqueline Sprayberry, Christopher Menge, Jonas Menge, Colton Menge, and Jacob Anhold.

In addition to his parents, Clayton was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Porter and Marie Malone.

A memorial service will be held at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren in Bridgewater at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 14, 2017, with Rev. Jeffery Carr and Rev. Christopher Zepp officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 13, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater
