Elsie Marie Janthey, 94, of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 18,2018, in the home of her loving caregivers, Donna & Philemon Resendz, of McGaheysville.
She was born on July 30, 1923 in Fresno, CA where she lived on her father’s farm until the family moved south to Santa Monica, CA in 1932. She graduated from University High School in 1941 and worked for the State of California for several years as a
stenographer. In 1948, she moved to Pittsburgh, PA, to marry Carl H. Janthey of Weehawken, NJ, who passed in 2008. They had met in California at her mother’s house when Carl came to dinner before shipping out with the Navy during WWII. After 50 years in Pittsburgh, she and Carl moved to Bridgewater, VA to be closer to family and spend more time with their granddaughters. Elsie was an active member of
the Lutheran Church until she joined the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, pastored by Jeff Carr. Elsie was also an exercise enthusiast, always on the go and often spotted riding around Bridgewater on her tricycle, sporting her signature red hat and coat.
Elsie is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth M. Janthey, of Olney, MD and Christine Bowlen, of Port Republic, VA, along with her son-in-law Gene Bowlen and her beloved granddaughters Joan Bowlen and Anna Bowlen.
