Obituary for Janet Coffman Sohn

Janet Coffman Sohn, 98, of Bridgewater, passed away Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at the Bridgewater Retirement Village. She was born September 25, 1919 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Frank and Maude Coffman.

On June 25, 1977, she married William L. Sohn, who preceded her in death on July 7, 1997.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Paul Coffman.

She is survived by her sister Marguerite C. Sanger; nephews, Robert Coffman, Keith Coffman, David Coffman and wife Renee, Donald Sohn, Ronald Sohn and wife Eileen, Robert G. Sanger and wife Sue, Paul Sanger and wife Julie and a niece Karen Willi and husband George, and a number of great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Janet was a graduate of Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA, and received her Master’s degree from Ohio State University.

She was a mathematics teacher at Catonsville Senior High School where she served as chairman of the mathematics department. Janet was a member of the writing teams for the School Mathematics Study Group text “Geometry with Coordinates” during the summers of 1961 and 1962 at Yale and Stanford.

Janet served her church and community in many capacities including president of the Women’s Club of Catonsville, Maryland, and a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a philanthropist in the best sense of the word and freely dispensed love to her family, friends, students, church, and community.

Pastor Jeff Carr will conduct a memorial service 1:30 pm Sunday at Lantz Chapel at the Bridgewater Retirement Community. Burial will be 11:00 am Monday at Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, MD.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Bridgewater Church of the Brethren at 420 College View Drive, Bridgewater, VA 22812 and/or Bridgewater Retirement Community, Resident Care Endowment Fund at 302 N Second Street, Bridgewater, VA 22812.
