Obituary for Lucille Virginia Shirkey Cox

Lucille Virginia Shirkey Cox, 90, of Dayton, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at White Birch Estates.

She was born in Spring Creek on November 6, 1927 and was a daughter of the late Silas David and Ruth Regina (Shickel) Shirkey.

Lucille was an active member of Montezuma Church of the Brethren where she participated in numerous activities. She loved her family and took great pride in baking for them and friends, needlepoint work, and sewing (as she designed and made her daughters' wedding dresses). She had worked at Harrisonburg Construction and Shull's Greenhouse.

She was united in marriage on July 17, 1949 to Samuel Norman Cox, and he preceded her in death on January 17, 2007.

Lucille is survived by three children, Sam Cox, Jr. and wife Mary, of McGaheysville, Vicki Richard and husband David, of Bridgewater and Barbara Moyer and husband Roger, of Dayton; a sister, Ramona Evans and husband Phil, of Dayton. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Terri Alsina & husband George, Chip Cox, Tammy Eckard & husband Craig, Josh Richard & wife Crystal, Claudia Phillips & husband Stacy, Holly Wood & husband Dean, Adam Richard & wife Katie, Dusty Moyer & wife Rachel, and Drew Richard & wife Lindsey; fourteen great-grandchildren, Sam Burgess, Sarah Burgess, Justen Cox, Audrey Cox, Jared Eckard, Caleb Eckard, Timmy Phillips, Marshal Phillips, Ava Richard, Finn Richard, Oliver Wood, Malachi Moyer, Eli Moyer, and Josiah Moyer. Nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Montezuma Church of the Brethren.

A memorial service will be held at Montezuma Church of the Brethren at 4:00 PM on Sunday, July 8, 2018 with Pastor David R. Miller officiating. Burial will be private.

Family requests memorial contributions be made to the Montezuma Church of the Brethren, Music Fund, 4937 Ottobine Rd., Dayton, VA 22821.
