Obituary for Mikhail Makarovich Shulgan

Mikhail Makarovich Shulgan, 89, was called by God into the heavenly presence of His Lord and Savior whom he loved, Jesus Christ, on March 24, 2018 while at Sentara RMH, following an illness.

Born and raised in Brest, Belarus, and being saved by the Lord as a boy he was baptized at age 17. That following year at age 18 he was falsely accused and sentenced for ten years and then imprisoned by Stalin's Communist Regime at a Siberian Labor Camp. By God's grace, he was released in only three years. He then served an obligatory four years in the Soviet Army. The Lord that saved him as a boy never left him as a young man during all the tribulation he faced. Having afterward gone back home to Brest, he met his lovely bride, married, and started a family. He worked hard in construction all his life to provide, but most of all he taught his children to pray and to read their Bibles. He taught them how to not be stained by the world in the context of a Socialist society that persecuted Baptists for their beliefs. He was a living testimony to the faithfulness of the God if men and women will be faithful to Him. During his retirement years in Belarus, he continued helping others with their own carpentry and construction projects. While retired, the United States government granted his petition for Religious Persecution Refugee Status. He immigrated to Harrisonburg, VA in 1994 with his wife and three daughters, and later helped the rest of his adult children also come to the US. He has been a faithful member of the First Russian Baptist Church of Mt. Crawford and would attend worship services all throughout his final illness. This final illness ushered him through the Valley of the Shadow of Death within this last week. Having finally met Death, his last enemy, and declaring that "Jesus is Lord over the living and the dead", Mikhail Makarovich Shulgan then entered into eternal life and now enjoys unbroken fellowship with His Savior.

He leaves behind the love of his life and wife of his youth, Yevdokiya (Pekun) Shulgan, having been married to her 62 years. Additionally he leaves behind his ten children: Vasilii, Alexandr, Mikhail, Pavel, Yelena, Timofey, Veniamin, Raisa, Svetlana, and Ludmila, and their spouses along with 37 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, and two brothers and one sister.

Mikhail Makarovich Shulgan was man devoted to his Savior, his family, his calling, and his church. He was a true servant of others. He will be dearly missed. Soli Deo Gloria.
