Obituary for Dr. Samuel Paul Pickenpaugh

Dr. Samuel Paul Pickenpaugh was born on December 2, 1933 in Morgantown, West Virginia.  He entered heaven on Monday morning, November 12, 2018. 

Samuel P. Pickenpaugh was the 2nd child and son of Harry and Margaret Pickenpaugh. After graduation from Morgantown high school Sam enrolled in Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tennessee. On December 2,1954 Sam married Grace Guseman in their hometown of Morgantown. He was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene in July 1959.  Sam pastored churches in Onego, Belington, and Buckhannon, West Virginia, Lynchburg and Richmond Southside, Virginia, First Church of the Nazarene in Lawrence, Kansas, Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene in Jacksonville, Florida and finally Pensacola First Church of the Nazarene, Pensacola, Florida.  He was then appointed as District Superintendent of the Western Australia District Church of the Nazarene in 1987. In 1989 his responsibilities were expanded to include the Northern Pacific District in Australia also.  Following their service in Australia, they served as District Superintendent for the Minnesota District Church of the Nazarene from 1992 to 2000.  Sam was honored to have served on the board of trustees for his alma mater, Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee and for Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas who honored him with a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, of almost 64 years and daughter, Charlotte Holter (Robert), granddaughter, Leslie, and great-grandson, Benjamin. He was predeceased by his parents and his only brother, William Pickenpaugh.  He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and their children.

Sam was a dedicated Christian, pastor, leader, and friend to all he met.  Sam loved his church and the mission of his church.  His life was filled with many joys and accomplishments. He loved his many dogs and was a sportsman who relished hunting and fishing.
 
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, 1871 Boyers Road, Harrisonburg, Virginia.  The funeral will follow with Rev. Jim Harrison and Rev. Kerry Willis officiating. Interment to be held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, Virginia following the service.  The service will also be available on FaceTime live for friends who may want to view the service through the FaceBook page of Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene.  A meal will be provided for family and visiting friends after the interment.
