Obituary for Robert "Daddy Bob" Jerome, Sr.

Robert “Daddy Bob” Jerome Sr., passed away on July 4, 2019 at the age of 103. The gentlest of men, he was adored by all who knew him. He was a devoted father of three, grandfather and great-grandfather, and adoring husband of Margaret Esther Atkinson of Hampden-Sydney, Virginia, his wife for 73 years.

Born in Wisconsin as the eldest child (actually, he was born as the only child, but latter became the eldest) in a loving family, his sales career began with a paper route and door-to-door fire extinguisher and egg enterprises while still in primary school. At 18, as ‘Lefty’ Jerome, he organized a local baseball team for which he pitched. Most of his working career was spent with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, beginning on the factory floor and retiring as the Manager of Government Sales. In his “retirement” he was instrumental in founding the Business Bank of Tysons Corner.

During WWII, Bob worked for the Army Counter-Intelligence Corps. While stationed in Petersburg, Va., he successfully courted his future wife (although he said most of the effort was spent wooing her parents).

Bob spent much of his life living in the Lake Barcroft community in Northern Virginia, during which he and Esther served their church, the Gideons, Family Services of Northern Virginia, Meals on Wheels, and the Hampden-Sydney College Museum.

Throughout his life, Daddy Bob was the epitome of a caring and ethical man, refusing financial opportunities he felt were inconsistent with his moral code. His endless patience, good humor, persistence, and mild manner will be sorely missed but remain a part of all who knew him.

Memorial donations may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607 or the Bridgewater Rescue Squad, PO Box 268, Bridgewater, VA 22812.
