Obituary for Joseph Wayne Judd

Rev. J. Wayne Judd, 82, of Bridgewater, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

He was born in Luray on April 6, 1935, a son of the late J. E. Bergie Judd and Pearl (Cave) Judd.

Rev. Judd was a retired minister in the Church of the Brethren. He was a member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.

He was united in marriage on August 24, 1963, to Patricia (Stinson) Judd.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Phil Judd, and wife, Michele, of Harrisonburg and Marty Judd and wife, Courtney, of Weyers Cave. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Denali Judd, Hayden Judd, and Mason Judd; and a sister, Naomi Judd Inskeep, of Luray.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Randolph Judd and Carroll Judd, and a sister, Martha Judd Wing.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Wayne entered Brethren Volunteer Service, which led him to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation working with the Lakota people. That experience began a lifelong appreciation for Native American culture.

His education includes a Bachelor degree from Bridgewater College, Master of Divinity degree from Bethany Theological Seminary, and culminated in a Doctor of Ministry degree from Bethany. In addition, he received certification in Clinical Pastoral Education.
As pastor he served churches in Elgin, Illinois; Nampa, Idaho; Waynesboro, VA; Bridgewater, VA; and Elizabethtown, PA. His congregants often praised his sermons and prayers for unique perspectives. His pastoral work resulted in publications of his sermons, prayers, and poetry. Writing became one of the most profound passions of his ministerial life.

During his extensive ministry, he initiated trips to Pine Ridge Reservation to introduce others to Native American life. He participated in Pastors for Peace which led him to drive in a convoy of trucks to Nicaragua. In addition he was involved in Brethren Disaster Relief in Puerto Rico as well as other locations.

Appreciating nature, he and Pat with their sons, Phil and Marty, had many happy times hiking, camping, and fishing.

A memorial service will be held at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren on Sunday, February 25, at 4:00pm with Pastor Jeff Carr and Pastor Chris Zepp officiating.
