Obituary for Elaine Mae Robertson Smith

Elaine Mae Robertson Smith, 92, of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at the Bridgewater Retirement Home. Elaine was born in Winston-Salem, NC on June 24, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Lola (Davis) and Jesse P. Robertson. On December 1, 1946 she married Wendell L. Smith who predeceased her. They celebrated 69 years together.

Elaine is survived by three children, Dana Meriwether and her husband, Gordon of West Point, VA, David Smith and his wife, Helen of Farmville, VA, and Beverly Butterfield and her husband, Wayne of New Market, VA. In addition she has four grandchildren, Kate Grisdale and her husband, Aaron, Evan Butterfield and his wife, Kim, Jennifer Amateis and her husband, Eric, and Kara Ackerman and her husband, Tyler. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, Liam and Emmaline Butterfield and Layla and Tyson Ackerman. Other survivors include her brother, Jesse D. Robertson and his wife, Wilma of Bridgewater, VA, brother-in-law, Eugene D. Smith and his wife, Theresa of Churchville, VA, sister-in-law, Miriam Odom Smith of Brevard, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elaine was preceded in death by sisters, Maude R. Robertson and Lucille L. Robertson; brother, Mortan P. Robertson; half-sisters, Ethel R. Jessen, Ruth R. Griffith and Rosa R. Mendenholl; half-brother, Russell L. Robertson; brother-in-law, Harold D. Smith; sisters-in-law, Mary H. Smith and Doris E. Smith

Elaine graduated from Bridgewater College with a BS degree in Home Economics, and completed additional coursework at UVA and JMU. She spent her career working as a teacher for Augusta County Public Schools and Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind.

Elaine was an accomplished homemaker. She loved to cook and delighted in welcoming family and friends to her table. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed knitting and numerous hand crafts. Elaine and Wendell enjoyed traveling in their motor home. After their retirement they spent many winters at their home in Lorida, FL. Elaine will be remembered for her gracious hospitality, her love for trying new recipes, and her quick sense of humor. She cherished having her children and grandchildren at home as much as possible.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren including Fraternity (Winston-Salem, NC), Pleasant Valley (Weyers Cave) and Bridgewater. She served on numerous committees over the years at both the local, district, and national level.

The family expresses appreciation to staff of Bridgewater Retirement Community, Joy House, for their attentive and loving care.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM Friday, Feb. 23rd., at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

A memorial service will be conducted 3PM on Saturday, Feb. 24th, at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Jeffery Carr. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, 420 College View Dr., Bridgewater, VA.
