Obituary for Douglas Martin "Skeeter" Dean

Douglas Martin “Skeeter” Dean, 83, of Bridgewater, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the Bridgewater Home.

He was born in Rockingham County on September 13, 1934, and was a son of the late Samuel and Beulah Shifflett Dean.

Skeeter founded Parkview Electric & Appliance prior joining his sons in Dean Brothers, Inc in 1987. He retired in June of 2012 because of his health problems with Colon Cancer and Parkinson's disease. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and received the National Defense Medal, Navy Occupation service Medal, China Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was active in the community and was a lifetime member of the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad (where he served as president from 1970-71), Harrisonburg Hose Company No. 1, VFW Post 632, West Rockingham Ruritain Club and the Blue Ridge Lions Club.

He is survived by three sons Eddie Dean, of Timberville, Doug Dean and wife Kim, of Harrisonburg, and Steve Dean, of Broadway; special friend and mother of his children, Vernie Dean, of Harrisonburg; nine grandchildren, Jon Dean, of Timberville, Katie Dean and fiance Mike Drake, of New York, Whitney Fawley, of Bridgewater, Logan Dean and fiancee Elizabeth Smith, of Harrisonburg, Quincey Dean, of Harrisonburg, Coby Dean and wife Callie, of Timberville, Miranda Dean, of Broadway, Christa Dean, of Dayton, Zach Dean, of Dayton; six great-grandchildren: Caylee Dean, Madison Fawley, Bentley Fawley, Easton Dean, Declan Dean and Dawson Dean.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Dean.

A graveside service will be held at East Lawn Memorial Gardens at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 with Rev. J. D. Glick officiating.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 4, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater. The casket will be closed.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the Serenity House at the Bridgewater Retirement Community for their wonderful care of Skeeter.
