Obituary for Geraldine Huffman Shifflett

Geraldine H. Shifflett, of Bridgewater, died at the Bridgewater Home on Monday, July 16, 2018, just shy of her 93 birthday. She was born July 28, 1925, near Centerville, Augusta County, to the late Carrie and Everette Huffman.

She married Samuel P. Shifflett on April 14, 1944, a union that lasted 68 years until his death in 2012.

She was predeceased by a sister, Wilda Wenger, and a brother Paul Huffman. Another brother, Melvin Huffman of Mt. Sidney, survives her.

In addition to her brother, Geraldine is survived by three daughters: Barbara Shifflett Myers and husband Vince of Mechanicsburg, Pa; Nancy Shifflett Bowman and husband Bruce of Fishersville; and Marty Shifflett of Harrisburg, Pa. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Karee Robinson and husband Sean of Camp Hill, Pa; Adam Myers and wife Mary Elizabeth of Mechanicsburg, Pa; Maggie Bowman Madison and husband Justin of Richmond; and Samuel Bowman of Richmond. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren.

Geraldine graduated from North River High School, Mount Solon, Va., class of 1943. She was proud of being a member of the women’s basketball team that won the state championship.

Following high school, she married and worked for the August Cooperative Farm Bureau at Weyers Cave until her husband’s discharge from the army. Many years later, she worked part time at J C Penny’s department store in Harrisonburg.
Geraldine was a life-long member of Summit Church of the Brethren, where she was a deacon, taught Sunday School, edited the church newsletter, served on the altar committee, was a member of the women’s fellowship, and visited the sick and shut-ins.

God gave Geraldine the gift of “hospitality.” Everyone was welcome in her home and around her kitchen table. She fed hundreds of guests—from visiting preachers to family and friends, and to those who needed a rest and a good meal. She was known for her baked goods—especially her homemade bread. She loved gardening, especially growing and arranging flowers. Her favorite holiday was Christmas when she artfully decorated her entire house.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 18, from 6pm to 7:30pm at the Johnson Funeral Service, Bridgewater. A memorial service and a celebration of life will be held at Summit Church of the Brethren, Bridgewater, on Thursday, July 19, at 2pm. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Summit Church of the Brethren, 314 Summit Church Road, Bridgewater, VA 22812 or to Bridgewater HealthCare Foundation, 302 N. Second Street, Bridgewater, VA 22812.
