Obituary for Frederick Marshall Garst

Frederick Marshall Garst, 62, of Bridgewater, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on August 16, 2018.

Mr Garst was born on November 28, 1955, in Harrisonburg, VA, and was the son of the late Marshall Lee Garst and is survived by his mother Freda Cowger Garst.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Sue Burkholder Garst.

Also surviving are his son Matthew Marshall Garst and wife Lora, son Cpt. Daniel Lloyd Garst and girlfriend Dr. Erika Shelburne. He is also survived by his beloved granddaughters Hannah and Carolina Garst. In addition, Fred is survived by his brother Gary Garst and wife Kim, sister Teresa Kiser and husband Keith, and sister Marsha Garst and husband David Rao. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and friends and colleagues.

Fred was known as an outstanding athlete. He is in the Turner Ashby High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in both football and shotput. He held the school record for shotput for over 35 years. As a standout in football, Fred went on to play at James Madison University on their first undefeated football team.

Fred graduated from James Madison University and went on to work as a geologist at North American Exploration Company in oil exploration. Fred worked for the United States Department of Agriculture for the past 33 years. He was also an adjunct professor at James Madison University.

Fred was known as a national expert in GIS computer mapping and wetlands. He co-authored a book with Dr. W. Cullen Sherwood. He was also an avid outdoorsman and a world renowned knife maker.

The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, where he was a lifelong member. Burial will be private.
